In the late-1860s, various elements led to the end of isolation between Japan and the Western world. Perhaps the most surprising of these factors was a rapid rise in popularity of Western wind bands in Japan, a level of popularity that even reached the attention of the nation's new emperor. This Sunday, the Adirondack Wind Ensemble presents the latest chapter in this saga: a musical tribute to Japan, helping this faraway land feel a little closer to our North Country home.
