Thera-Pets: Helping hooves in support of human health

The softness and warmth of an animal can offer comfort in a variety of situations. In Clinton County, an organization is harnessing that comfort to support human health and well-being. Thera-Pets offers therapy visits to places such as nursing homes, as well as farm based animal interactions.
For Ken and Holly Besaw, founders and owners of Kickin’ Up Dust Farm and Thera-Pets, in Schuyler Falls, New York, what began as a passion for animals and farm life has blossomed into something much larger. Since founding their farm in 2008, their dedication to sharing the animals has grown into a mission centered around bringing joy, comfort, education, and connection to people throughout the community. Through on-site farm visits and mobile animal experiences, they’ve created opportunities for people of all ages to experience the healing and happiness that animals can bring.

Thera-Pets, Inc. brings therapy donkeys and other animal companions to nursing homes and care facilities for therapeutic visits.
The Donkeys & Friends program helps children with special needs build skills and confidence through interactions with animals at Kickin' Up Dust farm. The program has limited enrollment and can accommodate only a small number of children each session. You may learn more about Donkeys & Friends at therapetsinc.org.
Farm visits are generally by appointment. Families, individuals and small groups may schedule visits to see the horses, donkeys, alpacas, goats, chickens and other animals. Call or text 518-569-1263 to arrange a visit.
The farm shop sells handmade goods, farm items, stuffed animals, and souvenir T-shirts, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Thera-Pets.
