Gloria Steinem’s Ancestry and Women’s Rights Movements | Finding Your Roots

Learn about the women's suffrage movement, and later feminist movements, through an exploration of both Gloria Steinem and of her grandmother, Pauline Steinem. Gloria Steinem is an American writer, lecturer, editor, activist, feminist, and a leader in the Women’s Rights Movement. In this clip from Finding Your Roots, Steinem learns that her grandmother was the first woman to win election to public office in Toledo, Ohio, and was an advocate for women's suffrage in the U.S. Students explore both the suffrage movement and the second wave movement of which the younger Steinem was a part.
