Close to Home Weekend 2010

Mountain Lake PBS Close to Home image

Mountain Lake PBS is hosting its 4th annual community weekend celebration, called 'Close to Home'. The weekend will showcase the station’s own local productions, as well as productions that are of local interest, including those reflecting the cultural life of the North Country region.

1980 Olympics imageDuring this Winter Olympic year Mountain Lake revisits the 1980 Winter Olympics with Small Town, Big Dreams: Lake Placid’s Olympic Story, a documentary that chronicles how the tiny village of Lake Placid, New York, grew into a winter sports capital and gave the world the greatest hockey upset in Winter Olympic history—the Miracle on Ice. And many people who participated in the 1980 Winter Olympics as sportscasters, course masters and competitors will share their recollections of this historical event in a collection of interviews entitled Winter Olympic Memories. Antler Chandelier

Productions from the past and the present will be aired, with familiar host faces from programs including Mountain Lake Journal with Thom Hallock, Rustic Living with Aubrey Bresett and Derek Muirden, Roadside Adventures with Derek Muirden, and Art Express with Paul Larson. Several Mountain Lake PBS productions like the Collector's Edition of A Castle In Every Heart: The Arto Monaco Story, the animated documentary Dead Reckoning~Champlain in America, and Forgotten War: The Struggle for North America will also be shown over the weekend.

Not only will Mountain Lake PBS producers, staff members, board members and volunteers be in the studio for live on-air appearances, but the station is bringing in many community partners to make live on-air appearances as well.

Congratulations to Ronald Sullivan for winning the antler chandelier in our drawing! The drawing on Januaryt 31st culmintated Mountain Lake's Close to Home Weekend. Bob Peck, candelier artist, generously donated the chandelier for our drawing. The chandelier consists of eight Elk antlers that were shed, four lights, four chamois shades, 10 feet of wire and 9 feet of 4-gauge chain. It measures 36 inches wide and 30 inches high, and weighs 23 pounds. What a unique and 'rustic' addition it will make for Ronald's home.

Close to Home will also be incorporated into the Thursday evening program schedule during Mountain Lake's pledge periods throughout the year, featuring an all-local theme beginning with Mountain Lake Journal and Mountain Lake Journal EXTRA.
