MATERIALS TO HAVE IN THE HOME TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN TO READ AND WRITE
- A special space to store children's books
- Books, magazines and newspaper, both yours and your child's, in different areas of your home
- Puppets, dolls or tapes so that children can create and record their own stories
- Inexpensive plastic letters that can be placed on cookies sheets or on the refrigerator to make words
- Books on tape so that children can hear language in as many ways as possible
- Puppet theaters either store bought or cardboard boxes so that children can produce their own plays
- Chalkboards or dry erase boards so that children can write words and messages using many different tools
- Computers or typewriters to produce stories and illustrate them
- A bulletin board or special area to display finished stories
