- Set aside time everyday to read to your child. Some days it might be as simple as reading a cartoon or an advertisement from the newspaper.
- Make a “Word Wall”(Cunningham and Hall) in your child’s room. If they come across a word in their reading they don’t know write it on an index card and add it to their “Word Wall”. A couple times a week have them read the words on the “Word Wall”.
- Read poetry to make your child aware of the rhythm and rhyme of language.
- Follow a simple recipe with your child. Reading the recipe and adding the ingredients in sequential order is similar to the reading process.
- Watch a favorite TV show together. Talk about what the main idea was and who the characters were. Try to help your child write a story about the show or create a new ending.
- Show your child how to take messages. Encourage them to include who, what, where etc.
- Play word games as a family. (games such as “Boggle”, “Scrabble” etc.)
