Steven Kellogg was born in 1941 in Norwalk, Connecticut. Early in his childhood he developed a fascination with the stories and pictures in his books. He spent many hours drawing and creating his own stories and sharing them with his sisters in an activity they called "telling stories on paper." It entailed Steven spinning a narrative while feverisly sketching the accompanying illustrations, which he would hand off to one sister and then to the other until they were buried in paper.
Observing the aduilts in his neighborhood, Steven noticed early in life that not all of them enjoyed their jobs, and he was determined to choose an occupation that he really loved. Steven recalls, "I looked at the grownups and noticed that some loved their work while others did not, and the corresponding effect that their attitudes toward their work had on their moods made a big impression on me." Steven's enthusiasm for literature and art continued throughout his high school years, and afterward he attended The Rhode Island School of design where he majored in illustration.
Steven's determination to stick to his dream has brought many wonderfully illustrated books to children's literature. His first book was published in 1967 and he has gone on to illustrate over 100 books. Steven currently creates his whimsical illustrations and tall tales in upstate New York where he lives with his wife Helen.
