Bill Haugland, born in Montreal in 1942, was brought up in a media-oriented family. He was encouraged, at a very early age, to exercise his imagination and to explore all avenues of creativity. Bill won honorable-mention for a short story, submitted to an Arts and Letters contest at a Montreal newspaper, when he was just ten years old. His interests, always supported by an ad-executive father and his mother, a concert-level pianist and school-teacher, ranged from writing to music and landscape painting.
It seemed that career choice was almost predestined. Bill's talent for writing and preoccupation with "all things media" led him to broadcasting courses at Ryerson Institute in Toronto, where he placed in the top-ten of a field of 150 students. He was subsequently hired by CFCF Radio and Television (now CTV Montreal) in 1961, thus launching a career that would span 45 years as a television journalist, reporter and anchorman.
If there is truth to the idea that everyone has a so-called "bucket-list" of things one hopes to accomplish in life, retirement provided Bill with the opportunity to realize one of his major goals ... namely to become a published author.
